A delicate study of a hand by the 19th
century painter and decorator Sir William Blake Richmond (named after William
Blake; his father was a devotee of the artist). The son of George Richmond RA (a
successful miniature painter), he became an Academician in 1895 and few years
later became professor of painting at the Royal Academy. Having travelled
extensively in Italy and been influenced by the frescoes of Giotto and the work
of the Venetian artists, he began painting high art subjects on a monumental
scale and was even commissioned to design frescoes and mosaics for the ceiling
of St Paul’s cathedral. |
