fine, dark impression.
A delicately executed views of the Islington Waterhouse (built
1613) and the New River, looking south east. Plate ‘b’ shows the
city of London and St. Paul’s Cathedral in the distance. Hollar
had fled from London to Islington with his family at the outbreak
of the Great Plague in 1665. However, poverty meant that the Hollars
could not move further away from the stricken capital and tragically
Hollar lost his son James to the illness. Hind 77 II/II. |
