Keep Within Compass
Published as the Act directs 9th
November 1784
Late 18th century copper
engraving with some etched lines printed on laid paper
Sheet: 287 x 369 mm
Some marginal tears. Some surface
rubbing.
Price: £175 |
|
Keep within compass and you shall be
sure, to avoid many troubles which others endure.
A decorative piece, dominated by Masonic
imagery. A young gentleman stands in front of an idyllic landscape. He gestures
towards bags of coins at his feet. This image is framed by a compass, which has
the words ‘Fear God’ inscribed at the top. Around the outside of this circular
composition are scenes depicting the vices which (as the whole composition
demonstrates) can envelope the individual if they stray outside of the compass.

[Composition]
Mid to late 18th century
gouache on paper which has been mounted on card.
Sheet: 168 x 116 mm
In very good condition.
Price: £595 |
|
A delicate and decorative composition
depicting a young woman and her child in a classical landscape with ruins in the
foreground. The old man in the background suggests that this could also be an
allegorical piece; we have youth admiring beauty in the form of the young woman
looking up at the classical statue and old age and time, in the form of the man,
receding into the distance. |

Christ]
Published May 16th 1881 by
Fairless and Beeforth, Doré Gallery, 35 New Bond Street, London. Copyright

Late 19th century steel
engraving printed onto chine colé, mounted on backing board.
Plate: 925 x 676 mm

excellent impression.
Price: £150 |
|
This scene depicts the gathering of the
Jewish Elders to plot the demise of Christ. Christ himself is depicted in the
background, preaching to his followers. Doré draws attention to the figure of
Christ through the use of chiaroscuro; a characteristic which can be seen in
many of his religious subjects. |

[Christ descending the steps]
Published June 1st 1877 by
Fairless and Beeforth, Doré Gallery, 35 New Bond Street, London. Copyright

Late 19th century steel
engraving printed onto chine colé, mounted on card.
Plate: 915 x 658 mm
Some spotting. An excellent impression.
Price:
£195 |
|
A decorative piece depicting Christ
descending the steps, with the crown of thorns upon his head. Aesthetically,
this is a very pleasing composition, with Christ as the central figure standing
out. It is possible, from examining some of the figures within the crowd, that
Doré would have been influenced by the work of Raphael. |

[Christ ascending Golgotha]
Published March 10th 1890 by

Late 19th century steel
engraving printed on chine colé, mounted on backing card.
Plate: 938 x 680

|
A dramatic depiction of Christ ascending
Golgotha, his death imminent. A halo of light draws attention to the figure of
Christ, who is bearing the weight of the cross on his shoulder. Outside of the
halo of light, the scene appears chaotic, with people looking on in despair at
the figure about to be crucified. |

The city was first
founded on the east side of the River Ozama by Bartholomew Columbus, brother of
