An allegorical image depicting the Dutch
phenomenon, ‘Tulip Mania’. The central focus of the image is the fool’s cap in
which a group of Dutch merchants stand and conduct business; one man is
portrayed using a set of weighing scales. To the left of the fools cap, a man
can be seen pouring gold into the gutter; this is symbolic of the importance of
tulips in this period, and how they became as valuable, in some cases more so,
than gold. In the background, riding on a donkey, is the figure of Flora, the
goddess of spring, flowers and fertility. |
