Apollo and supplicants

18th century drawing (pencil and ink)

Sheet: 510 x 790 mm

Crease down the centre, edges slightly damaged.

Price: £450

The naked figure tied to the chair is believed to represent the god Apollo whose voice is being drowned by the fool [Fame?]  with a trumpet on the braying ass.

Apollo is being tormented[?] by the figure in the hat behind him.

This might be a Phillistine patron who seemingly tries to imprison or hold back the god.

Alternatively it is Death who rings time with his little bell.

The figures kneeling at his feet show:

A foolish artist with asses ears and a palette,

Another figure appears to be a writer, corrupted by money and with Masonic symbols by the piles of gold coins.

Next to him appears to be a poet bowing in obsequiousness,

The figure disappearing to the left seems to be Mercury, messenger of the gods, also portrayed with two asses heads [ .

The parlous state of the arts is reinforced by the fresco behind, where Father Time weeps (or sleeps) alongside other mourners; the allegorical busts of painting, architecture and sculpture, lifeless and empty.

The nakedness of the participants emphasises the satirical intent of the piece.

It could be a satire on the patronage of the Arts with the good artist being persecuted or discriminated against by the bad and mercenary artists, or perhaps a criticism of the control and censorship of the Arts with artists refusing to follow their true inspiration (the voice of Apollo) because of their stupidity and greed, while Time has not yet come to revive the good Arts.

An architectural cross-section showing the Hotel de Ville in Paris is all its finery for the marriage celebration of Louise Elizabeth and Prince Philippe of Spain. Le Roy de la Feve (The King of the Party)

Based on the painting by Jacob Jordaens (one of the leading Flemish Baroque artist of the 17th Century), this scene depicts the Flemish celebration of the Epiphany. One person is appointed King for the evening and in this particular scene, Jordaens has depicted the oldest member of the party as King. From the facial expressions and the rowdy chaotic nature of the scene, Jordaen’s is showing his distaste for drunkenness; on the original painting, the words “Nothing seems more like a madman than a drunkard” are inscribed at the top.
