Petit Waux-Hall

Paris, L’Autour 1780 – c. 1810

Copper engraving

Trimmed within platemark

460x600mm

£ 450

Petit Waux-Hall

A fine, rare, humorous engraving, showing visitors at the French Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, near Paris. In the centre a pretty, elaborately dressed young woman, wearing a flounced, panniered dress, lowcut overdress and enormous, domed hat trimmed with feathers, is being ogled by a young buck and his elderly, leering friend. Meanwhile her chaperone has been distracted by an elderly, unfashionably dressed man with whom she is shaking hands. In the background are high hedges and a crowd of smartly dressed revellers. London’s Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens on the south bank of the Thames opened just before the Restoration in 1660, and during the height of their popularity during the latter half of the eighteenth century, spawned many copies notably in Paris and St. Petersburg. Until the opening of Westminster Bridge in 1750 the gardens could only be reached by crossing the Thames by boat. Under the management of Jonathan Tyers between 1728-67, the gardens became one of London’s most popular resorts. Tyers added supper boxes, ruins, arches, pavilions, intimate wooded walks and a Gothick orchestra which could accomodate fifty musicians. In 1840 the owners went bankrupt and after many revivals the site was finally built over in 1859.
